Mahjong Solitaire Rules

Mahjong Solitaire (also spelled Mahjongg Solitaire, Majong, or Mah Jong Solitaire) is a single-player tile matching puzzle game. Unlike traditional four-player Mahjong, Mahjong Solitaire is played alone against the board. The objective is simple: remove all 144 tiles by matching them in pairs.

How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

The game begins with 144 tiles arranged in a layered pattern. Tiles are stacked on top of each other in a formation that varies by layout. Your goal is to clear the entire board by finding and removing matching pairs of tiles.

To remove tiles, click or tap two tiles that are identical and free. When a valid pair is selected, both tiles disappear from the board, potentially revealing new tiles underneath.

What Makes a Tile "Free"?

A tile is considered free (and available for matching) when it meets two conditions:

Tile Types

Mahjong Solitaire uses 144 tiles divided into several categories:

Suited tiles (108 tiles): Three suits — Bamboo, Circles, and Characters — each with values 1 through 9. Each tile appears four times. You must match tiles of the same suit and value.

Wind tiles (16 tiles): Four winds — East, South, West, North — each appearing four times. Match identical winds only.

Dragon tiles (12 tiles): Three dragons — Red, Green, White — each appearing four times. Match identical dragons.

Flower tiles (4 tiles): Four unique flower tiles (Plum, Orchid, Chrysanthemum, Bamboo). Any flower tile can be matched with any other flower tile.

Season tiles (4 tiles): Four unique season tiles (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter). Any season tile can be matched with any other season tile.

Winning and Losing

You win by successfully removing all 144 tiles from the board. You lose when no more matching pairs are available and you have no shuffles remaining. Every game on free-mahjong.online is generated to be solvable — so with careful play and strategic thinking, you can always clear the board.
