Mahjong Solitaire (also known as Mahjongg, Majong, or Mah Jong Solitaire) is a single-player tile matching puzzle game. The board features 144 tiles arranged in layered patterns. Your goal is to remove all tiles by matching identical free pairs.
Unlike traditional four-player Mahjong from China, Mahjong Solitaire was created as a computer game in 1981 by Brodie Lockard. It became one of the most popular casual games of all time through early Windows and Mac software.
Click or tap two matching free tiles to remove them from the board. A tile is "free" when it has no tile on top of it and at least one side (left or right) is open. Work from the outside in, prioritizing tall stacks and edge tiles. Use the Hint button if you get stuck, or Shuffle the remaining tiles.
We offer 6 different board layouts, each with its own strategic challenges:
The original 5-layer pyramid. The most iconic Mahjong layout since 1981.
Triangular formation. Work from the narrow peak downward.
Spread dragon shape with head, body and tail sections.
Castle shape with four corner towers and central keep.
Plus-shaped formation with intersecting bars.
Arch shape with two pillars and spanning deck.
Start by clearing tiles from the highest layers — they block the most tiles underneath. Match Flower and Season tiles early since they're flexible (any Flower matches any Flower). Save your shuffles for when you truly have no moves left. Read our full strategy guide for more advanced tips.
Mahjong Solitaire uses 144 tiles: 108 suited tiles (Bamboo, Circles, Characters), 16 Wind tiles, 12 Dragon tiles, 4 Flowers, and 4 Seasons. Each regular tile appears four times. Flowers and Seasons are special — any tile in the group can match any other in the same group. Learn more in our complete rules guide.
